Another remarkable phenomenon of the Czech musical emigration to Vienna is Jan Křtitel Vaňhal (1739-1813). While his oeuvre can be generally noted for its breadth and quality, the center of Vaňhal's compositional significance are in his instrumental compositions, which include string quartets and ca. 100 symphonies. Most of them have a healthy musical immediacy and a graceful melodic charm, which, at the time of their emergence, secured a considerable success at the top of contemporary production and catapulted the composer in historical evaluations to the side of the most significant artistic phenomena of his generation.
