On Saturday 3rd March two parts from the Richter's Te Deum 1781, recorded by Czech Ensemble Baroque Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Roman Válek, were played on BBC Radio 3.
Andrew McGregor said:
“First some of my favourite newcomers this week, beginning with a late 18th C Te Deum, the composer… I’ll let you listen to the opening before you find out.
…This recording begins with a spirited account of his so called trumpet symphonia which makes a brilliant upbeat for the Te Deum. Roman Válek conducts the Czech Ensemble Baroque Choir and Orchestra and they make a splendid sound. The only issue for me is the resonance of that church acoustic it’s so overpowering that the final cadence of that last number doesn’t actually appear to resolve the penultimate chord obscuring its own resolution but it’s still a hugely enjoyable reminder of an undersung European composer – one of his talents the Supraphon label is determined to remind you. This is the Czech Ensemble’s third Richter recording for the label.”
Record Review is on BBC Radio 3 (90–92 FM and Digital Radio) every Saturday 0900–1215 and is presented by Andrew McGregor. As well as the Building a Library feature (which looks at recordings of a specific work), the programme reviews a wide range of new releases with guest reviewers.
