Australian conductor Charles Mackerras, resident in Great Britain, is well known as a leading expert on Czech music and as one-time pupil of Václav Talich, that father of the modern Czech conducting tradition. Mackerras now supplements his Czech music discography with a very important item, this new recording of Bedřich Smetana's cycle of symphonic poems Má vlast (My Homeland), which not only stands as a highly attractive export item of Czech music but is also a touchstone for the evaluation of the qualities of the guest conductor. The recording was made at the ceremonial opening concert of the 1999 Prague Spring international music competition.
